FSC showcase in the Dutch municipality of Boskoop
The town hall in Boskoop will showcase a number of FSC-certified wood and paper products from 19 February onwards. Our Satino Nature products are among the eye-catchers. Quite a surprise for people who couldn't imagine that such a thing as FSC-certified tissue paper existed…
The Municipality of Boskoop is a motivated and progressive FSC covenant partner. It wanted to find an inspiring way of demonstrating its exemplary role in the area of Sustainable Purchasing. As a result, the Municipality asked FSC Netherlands to install a showcase of FSC-certified products in the town hall. Boskoop has chosen this way of making visitors better aware of the existence of this quality label. What is FSC? What can I personally contribute? What are the benefits for me as a consumer?
FSC broker Julian van der Velde reacted enthusiastically to this request. He started a search for FSC participants that were prepared to provide one or more products for the showcase. Our CSR Concept Manager, Nick op den Buijsch, is always willing to collaborate with initiatives of this kind. ‘One thing I have noticed is that people always seem to think of photocopier paper, envelopes and printed matter when talking about FSC paper products. They don't realise that toilet paper and paper tissues can also gain FSC-certification.’
FSC certified paper can have different types of labels:
FSC 100%
paper made from 100% pulp (wood) harvested from FSC-certified plantations
FSC Mixed Sources
paper made from at least 50% pulp (wood) harvested from FSC-certified plantations; the remaining pulp is either recycled and/or wood from FSC-authenticated sources
FSC Recycled
100% recycled paper, of which at least 85% is post-consumer
100% recycled
‘As a producer of hygienic paper, we have worked in accordance with strict environmental quality labels for many years,’ Nick op den Buijsch continues. ‘Paper hand towels and toilet paper are throw-away products. So it's perfectly logical to use recycled material rather than material taken from new sources. This is why Van Houtum consciously chooses to use the FSC Recycled label.’
‘We publicise this intensively. On the web site for example, on our packaging and in interviews. It often provokes amusing reactions. People use large quantities of hygienic paper every day without realising that it is also possible to make it available in a sustainable form…’
